How to use Word counter

Word Counter counts the words, characters, sentences, lines and UTF-8 bytes in any text you paste. Words are found with Unicode word boundaries for the interface language, so letters and numbers in any script count while spaces and punctuation do not. Characters are counted as graphemes, the units a reader sees, with code points listed separately.

  1. Type or paste your source, or load an example.

  3. Review and copy or download your result. Pause Live results to run manually. Sources or individual settings above 20,000 characters require an explicit run.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter handle hyphens, contractions and numbers?

Hyphenated terms such as well-known count as two words, while contractions like don't and decimal numbers like 3.14 each count as one. Boundaries follow Unicode word rules for the interface language rather than splitting on spaces alone.

Can I count words in Chinese or Japanese text?

Yes. Unicode word segmentation splits text written without spaces into word-like segments, so a Japanese sentence is not counted as one long word. Counts can still differ from other software that uses its own dictionary or counts characters instead.

How are sentences and lines counted?

Sentences come from the browser's sentence segmentation, so sentence-ending punctuation usually closes one. Lines are counted by line breaks, including empty lines and a final empty line after a trailing break, and an empty input shows zero lines.

Where is my input processed?

This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.

What are the input limits?

Text operations generally accept up to 2,000,000 characters. Individual parsers, generators and formulas apply additional limits shown by their controls.
