How to use Board foot calculator

The Board foot calculator works out lumber volume from thickness and width in inches, length in feet and the number of boards. It multiplies thickness by width by length and divides by 12, then multiplies by the board count. One board foot equals a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long.

  1. Enter the requested values in the settings panel.
  2. Set thickness (inches), width (inches), length (feet), boards.
  3. Run board foot calculator, review the output, then use the available copy or download controls.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate board feet?

Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12, times the number of boards. The default of ten 1 by 6 inch boards, 8 feet long, gives 40 board feet.

Should I use nominal or actual lumber dimensions?

The calculator uses whatever numbers you enter. Hardwood is often sold by the board foot on rough, nominal thickness, while surfaced lumber is smaller. Check which measure your lumber supplier uses before comparing prices.

How do I calculate board feet for one board?

Set Boards to 1 and enter its thickness, width and length. A 2-inch-thick, 10-inch-wide board that is 6 feet long is 2 × 10 × 6 ÷ 12 = 10 board feet.

Where is my input processed?
