## Overview (en)

The Descriptive statistics calculator takes a list of numbers and returns the count, mean, median, minimum, maximum, first and third quartiles, and both population and sample standard deviations. It also builds a histogram with 1 to 50 equal-width bins, shown as a chart and a table of bin ranges and counts. Quartiles use linear interpolation at position (n − 1)p.

## Supported tasks (en)

Reports descriptive statistics and histogram counts. Quartiles use linear interpolation at (n−1)p; population and sample standard deviations are labelled separately.

## Steps (en)

1. Paste the source into the input editor, or load the built-in example.
2. Set histogram bins.
3. Run descriptive statistics calculator, review the output, then use the available copy or download controls.

## Settings

- Histogram bins (en; key: bins; type: number); minimum: 1; maximum: 50

## Limitations (en)

Local bounded calculations. Numeric inputs must be finite and within the visible ranges. Lists and tables have operation-specific limits. Models, estimates and supplied rates must be checked against your intended use.

## Example input

```text
2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12
```

## Questions (en)

### How are quartiles calculated?

Values are sorted and each quartile is read at position (n − 1) × p, interpolating linearly between neighboring values. Q1 uses p = 0.25, the median 0.5 and Q3 0.75. Other software may use a different quartile method and give slightly different results.

### What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?

Population SD divides the sum of squared deviations by n, while sample SD divides by n − 1 to estimate the spread of a larger population from a sample. Both are shown, and sample SD requires at least two values.

### How does the histogram choose bin ranges?

The range from minimum to maximum is split into the number of bins you choose, from 1 to 50, all of equal width. Each value is counted in its bin, and the maximum falls in the last bin. If every value is the same, a width of 1 is used.
