## Overview (en)

The Profit margin calculator takes a cost and a revenue figure and returns the profit, the profit margin and the markup. Margin is profit divided by revenue, while markup is profit divided by cost, so the two percentages differ for the same sale. A loss appears as negative profit when cost exceeds revenue.

## Questions (en)

### How do I calculate profit margin?

Profit margin equals (revenue − cost) / revenue × 100. With a cost of 70 and revenue of 100, profit is 30 and the margin is 30%. Revenue must be greater than zero because it is the denominator.

### What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup uses cost as the denominator: (revenue − cost) / cost × 100. The same sale with a cost of 70 and revenue of 100 has a 30% margin but a markup of about 42.86%. Markup is omitted when cost is zero.

### Can the profit margin be negative?

Yes. When cost is higher than revenue, profit is negative and so are the margin and markup. A cost of 120 against revenue of 100 shows a profit of −20 and a margin of −20%.

### Where is my input processed?
