Tool ID: character-counter. Requested language: ps. Description language: en. Complete guide translation: no; untranslated sections use English.

## Overview (en)

Character Counter measures text in three units: graphemes, which are the characters a reader sees, Unicode code points and UTF-8 bytes. It also reports words, lines and sentences. Comparing the units explains why an emoji or accented letter can look like one character on screen but count as several code points or bytes against a database or API limit.

## Supported tasks (en)

Compare graphemes, code points and UTF-8 bytes.

## Steps (en)

1. Type or paste your source, or load an example.
2. Results update automatically as you edit.
3. Review and copy or download your result. Pause Live results to run manually. Sources or individual settings above 20,000 characters require an explicit run.

## Settings

No additional settings.

## Limitations (en)

Text operations generally accept up to 2,000,000 characters. Individual parsers, generators and formulas apply additional limits shown by their controls.

## Example input

```text
Hello world.
A second line.
Café, İstanbul, 日本語, and 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.
```

## Privacy and connections (en)

This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.

## Questions (en)

### Why does one emoji count as several characters?

Many emoji are built from multiple code points joined together. A family emoji showing four people is one grapheme, yet it contains 7 code points and takes 25 UTF-8 bytes. Character Counter shows all three numbers side by side.

### How do I check the byte size of text for a database field?

Read the UTF-8 bytes figure. Basic Latin letters and digits use one byte each, while accented letters, many symbols and emoji use two to four bytes, so the byte length is often larger than the visible character count.

### Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?

Yes. Spaces, tabs and line breaks are included in the grapheme, code point and byte counts. A Windows line break made of a carriage return and line feed counts as one grapheme but two code points.

### Where is my input processed?

This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.

### What are the input limits?

Text operations generally accept up to 2,000,000 characters. Individual parsers, generators and formulas apply additional limits shown by their controls.
