How to use Citation formatter

Citation Formatter builds a basic reference for a web source from the author, year, title, publisher or site and an optional URL, in APA 7, MLA 9 or Chicago 17 style. It arranges the parts and punctuation for the chosen preset. Italics, author name normalization, access dates and DOI rules are not applied and need review against the style manual.

  1. Paste the source into the input editor, or load the built-in example.
  2. Set style preset, author (surname, initials / full name), publication year, title, publisher / site and the other available options.
  3. Run citation formatter, review the output, then use the available copy or download controls.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cite a web page with no date in APA?

Enter n.d. in Publication year. The year field accepts a four-digit year or n.d., and the APA 7 preset places it in parentheses after the author. Any other year format shows an error.

Does the citation formatter add italics to titles?

No. The output is plain text, so italics required by the style are not applied. The MLA 9 and Chicago 17 presets put the title in quotation marks; add italics yourself where your style guide calls for them.

Do I need to format the author name myself?

Yes. The author is used exactly as typed. For APA, enter the surname followed by initials, such as Example, A.; for MLA and Chicago, enter the name in the order your style requires. Multiple authors are not reformatted.

Where is my input processed?

This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.
