How to use Break-even calculator
The Break-even calculator takes total fixed costs, price per unit and variable cost per unit and returns the number of units needed to cover the fixed costs, the contribution per unit and the sales revenue at that volume. Units are fixed costs divided by contribution margin, rounded up to the next whole unit, and the exact unrounded figure is shown too.
- Adjust the values; an initial result is calculated from the defaults.
- Change the basic settings or open Advanced mode to fine-tune the result.
- Review and copy or download your result. Pause Live results to run manually. Sources or individual settings above 20,000 characters require an explicit run.

Frequently asked questions
What is the break-even point formula?
Break-even units equal fixed costs / (price per unit − variable cost per unit), rounded up to a whole unit. With 10,000 in fixed costs, a price of 50 and variable cost of 20, the exact figure is 333.33, so 334 units are needed.
How do I calculate break-even sales revenue?
After rounding units up, the calculator multiplies them by the price per unit. In the example of 334 units at 50 each, break-even sales are 16,700. Contribution per unit, price minus variable cost, is reported as well.
Why does the break-even calculator show an error?
Price per unit must be higher than variable cost per unit. If each sale does not add a positive contribution, fixed costs can never be covered, so the calculator returns Price must exceed variable cost to break even.
