How to use Data size converter
The Data size converter takes an amount of digital data and returns it in another unit, from bits and bytes up to terabytes and tebibytes. It keeps decimal units such as kB, MB, GB and TB separate from binary units such as KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB, and it shows a one-unit factor line for every conversion.
- Adjust the values; an initial result is calculated from the defaults.
- Change the basic settings or open Advanced mode to fine-tune the result.
- Review and copy or download your result. Pause Live results to run manually. Sources or individual settings above 20,000 characters require an explicit run.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a GB and a GiB?
A GB is decimal: 1,000,000,000 bytes. A GiB is binary: 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 1,024 to the third power. The converter treats them as separate units, so 1 GiB converts to about 1.073741824 GB.
How many bits are in a megabyte?
A byte is 8 bits, and a decimal megabyte here is 1,000,000 bytes, so 1 MB equals 8,000,000 bits. A mebibyte, MiB, is 1,048,576 bytes, or 8,388,608 bits.
Why does my 1 TB drive show less space than expected?
Drive makers usually use decimal terabytes of 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, while some systems report binary units. Convert 1 TB to TiB here and you get about 0.909 TiB, which explains the apparent difference.
Where is my input processed?
This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.
What are the input limits?
Use finite numbers, valid dates and the ranges shown by each control. Invalid values produce an error without a downloadable result.
