What is port 443 used for?
Port 443 is listed as HTTPS, using TCP and UDP. For comparison, port 80 is listed as plain HTTP over TCP and 8080 as an alternate HTTP port, also over TCP.
Can this tool check if a port is open?
No. It only returns the conventional service for a port number you type and never connects to or scans any host. A port appearing here does not mean a service is running on it on your network.
