The Unix permissions calculator converts a file mode between octal and symbolic notation. Enter three or four octal digits such as 755 to get rwxr-xr-x, or nine symbolic characters to get the octal number. What does chmod 755 mean?
755 gives the owner read, write and execute (7 = 4 + 2 + 1), and gives the group and others read and execute (5 = 4 + 1). The calculator shows it as rwxr-xr-x. Similarly, 644 becomes rw-r--r--.
How do I convert rwxr-xr-x to octal?
Enter the nine characters exactly, using - for missing permissions. Each triplet becomes one digit, with r = 4, w = 2 and x = 1, so rwxr-xr-x converts to 755. Leave out the leading file-type character such as d.
How are setuid, setgid and sticky bits shown?
A fourth leading octal digit sets them: 4 for setuid, 2 for setgid and 1 for sticky. 4755 shows as rwsr-xr-x. A lowercase s or t means execute is also set, while uppercase S or T means the special bit is set without execute.
