How to use Text difference checker

Text Difference Checker compares your original text with a second version and highlights what changed, with added text in green and removed text in red. You can compare by words, lines or characters. Ignore whitespace-only changes stops spacing and line-edge indentation from being flagged, and the copyable result marks additions with + and removals with -.

  1. Paste the original text, then the comparison text.
  2. Choose words, lines or characters. Turn on Ignore whitespace-only changes when spacing should not count.
  3. Run text difference checker and read the added and removed text.

What this tool supports

Shows added and removed text. Turn on Ignore whitespace-only changes when spacing between words or indentation at the edges of a line should not count as an edit.

Frequently asked questions

Should I compare text by words, lines or characters?

Words is the default and suits edited prose. Lines works well for lists, code or configuration where each line is a unit. Characters reveals the smallest changes, such as a single corrected letter or punctuation mark.

How do I ignore spacing differences when comparing two texts?

Turn on Ignore whitespace-only changes. Word comparison then treats spacing between words as equal, line comparison ignores leading and trailing spaces on each line, and character comparison collapses spaces and tabs before comparing.

Can I copy the differences as plain text?

Yes. The text output lists each segment with a + for added text, a - for removed text and a space for unchanged text, so you can copy or download the comparison as a record of the changes.

Where is my input processed?

This operation processes its source in your browser. Copy and download are explicit actions; source input is not saved in an account or history.

What are the input limits?

Text operations generally accept up to 2,000,000 characters. Individual parsers, generators and formulas apply additional limits shown by their controls.
